Online Marketplace Development.

More now than ever, consumers have chosen online shopping over bricks and mortar stores. This mainly due to the fact that they're more convenient being open 24/7, there is also more trust in online transaction security nowadays.

Over 2 billion people shopped online in 2020, a lot was driven with the outbreak of COVID-19 and social distancing measures the number for 2021 is expected to be significantly higher.

Many Irish SMEs may have an online presence but only 32% actually have the facility to perform online transactions. eCommerce website development can be expensive and outside the budget of many smaller companies, Viability is also another factor as many companies don’t see any commercial gains to selling online, even though 53% of Irish shoppers have expressed a wish that Irish retailers should have an online facility.

There are a number of options available that are more feasible for small Irish Businesses, one is to develop a virtual store through an online marketplace platform such as Amazon, Etsy, Ebay or Bezzu. I recently conducted an online survey using feedback from a thousand respondents through LinkedIn.  I wasn’t surprised to see the results, when I asked where do they go online to find what they are looking for?

Survey Results were as follows.

  • 41% of respondents use Marketplaces like Amazon or eBay.

  • 41% go directly to the brands website found through an internet search or stored bookmark.

  • 12% search for products using social media.

  • 6% search using the Google Shopping tab.

Based on the results its clear Marketplace platforms and the likes of Google Search provide the easiest buying routes for online shopping. Through Social Commerce, social media is becoming increasingly more popular for product searches and online shopping, as it delivers a more seamless buying experience for its users.

Online Marketplaces provide other opportunities and benefits to their sellers.

  • Using a recognised and trusted marketplace platform will encourage trust in your own brand. Most marketplaces encourage customer reviews, allowing confidence in your own brand to grow with new customers.

  • Marketplace websites are becoming far more advanced, they use new search engine technologies to allow customers find what they are looking for easier and faster.

  • These product pages are optimised to allow all search engines to track and display them in relevant search results. Having your product pages optimised in the correct way within a marketplace platform can almost guarantee high visibility in searches on Google or Bing.
